Amazing kids helping inspire change in Venice Beach

“Be the Solution to Ocean Pollution” was the popular, fun and highly visible series of community events held at Venice Beach. The inaugural beach clean-up was held on Earth Day and since, close to 300 volunteers have helped inspire change and make the community beach clean-up events a local success. Families, businesses and school groups from all over the city dedicated more than 2,700 hours collectively over the past 6 months while collecting more than 300 pounds of trash and harmful debris from the coastline.

Spearheaded by the Children Sports International, the last “Be the Solution to Ocean Pollution” cleanup event for 2012 was held this past Saturday, September 22nd. The calm morning breeze helped the volunteers stay cool as they worked together to clean-up the section of the beach adjacent to the Venice Pier. These events are vital in maintaining the beach clean and safe for everyone to enjoy. In just  a few hours, they were able to round up over a hundred pounds of trash.  Aside from the usual suspects such as Styrofoam, plastic glass bottles, and tons of cigarette butts, many unusual items have been found during the cleanup like broken bike parts, an area rug and an inflatable mattress were rounded up. The purpose of the cleanup is to engage people around the city to remove trash and debris from beaches and pathway, to identify the sources of the litter, and to change the behaviors that cause pollution.

Hundreds of individuals across Los Angeles have come together throughout the year to participate in various community events hosted by Children Sports International. They have raised public awareness about inappropriate waste management practices and worked alongside many organizations and communities to become better stewards of our environment and promote health and fitness in under-served communities.

There was a great turnout for this past event and we would like to thank all our amazing volunteers who came out to make a difference in Venice Beach in 2012. We would also like to give a special thanks to our dedicated change makers from Jamba Juice, The Gap and students from Barnhart School and Santee Education Complex, we can’t do the work we do without your support!

Each person must have a signed waiver to participate in a beach cleanup. You can sign them onsite, but please remember to send your child with a pre-signed waiver if you aren’t going to be at the cleanup.
What to Wear and Bring
You should always wear sunscreen and a hat. You need to wear closed-toe shoes, to make sure you don’t step on anything sharp, and make sure to bring a reusable water bottle. We will provide all the clean-up supplies, however, we also encourage volunteers to bring reusable garden gloves or buckets from home to reduce the amount of trash we create during the cleanup.
How to Stay Safe
Sometimes at beach cleanups we find sharp or dangerous items. Never pick up anything that looks like it could be medical waste or broken glass, any kinds of needles or weapons, or any dead animal. Alert your cleanup captain or a lifeguard.  Don’t approach any wild animal, even if it seems sick or injured.

Venice 5K Run and Beach Clean-Up

Venice, CA – The weather was perfect for “Be the Solution to Ocean Pollution” in Venice Beach, a community 5K and beach clean-up held this past Saturday July 14th. The calm ocean breeze helped cool the runner’s down as they warmed up and participated in the free 5K event hosted by Children Sports International. This fantastic community event brought together men, women and children from all over the city to help promote physical activity and environmental awareness.

The participants had the chance to learn more about the benefits of sports performance training, how to prevent injuries with a dynamic warm-up and the importance of beach clean-ups. In just a couple of hours, close to 100lbs of garbage were cleaned up from the sands adjacent to the Venice Pier. These amazing volunteers found items ranging from broken radios to fireworks debris scattered over the beautiful shoreline.  All the participants in the 5K and clean-up were provided fresh fruits, snacks and refreshments along with an entry to a raffle for prizes given away at the event. Children Sports International will continue to encourage children to get active in sports and active in the community with these unique events. Don’t miss out on all the fun and activities; join Children Sports International and their dedicated volunteers at the next event in Venice on September 22nd.
